1 Amanda Bortner was born April 1, 1843 in Codorus, York, Pennsylvania. She married miller William Gibson Mitzel on September 15, 1859. He was a son of farmer Charles Mitzel and Elizabeth Gibson and was born January 19, 1837 in York, Pennsylvania. William enlisted with the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry, Company A, 182nd Volunteers. He saw action at Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg and the surrender of Lee at Appomattox and many other battles. While William was engaged with his company at the battle of Boydton Plank Road in Dinwiddie, Virginia, him and Amanda's first born son William died back at home.
William returned home to York to Amanda and they would have 9 more children. They had 12 children in all. Amanda and William moved their family to Lake, Ohio around the time of the death of her mother Mary Ann. Amanda died in 1886 in Stark County, Ohio., leaving William to raise their children. After Amanda died, William Mitzel met a woman named Catherine and they married in 1887. He was a miller until his death
