10 Matilda Bortner was born June 10, 1832 in Chanceford, York, Pennsylvania. She lost her first two sons and last daughter to early death. She would also raise two children for nearly the entire duration of the Civil War. Matilda married brick mason and well known York County auctioneer George Deveney in 1854. He was a son of mason George Devenney and Elizabeth Taylor and was born December 20, 1831 in Manheim, York, Pennsylvania.
George enlisted with the Pennsylvania 90th Infantry Co. B on February 13, 1862. Just 3 days after engaging in the bloody battle of Antietam his son Sylvan Jackson was born. He was also involved with the battles of Chancellorsville, heavily in Gettysburg, Battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg and many other operations and skirmishes. He left the 90th just before the great mine explosion at Petersburg to join the 101st as a musician just two months after most of the 101st was captured at the surrender of Plymouth in North Carolina that was sent to Andersonville Prison.
