Daniel Bortner was born July 31, 1821 in Chanceford, York, Pennsylvania. He married Emeline Carlotha Fair March 12, 1857. Daniel was a farmer in Glen Rock and he lived across the road from his brother Lewis and next to his sister Lucy. He bought 10 acres of land from Jacob Foust in 1869, and built a house there that was later occupied by his grand niece Araminda "Minnie" (Bortner) Krout and her husband Jacob Krout. He owned lots up to the Chestnut Hill Cemetery, formerly the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, where he is buried. In 1895 he deeded the land which is now Cottage Avenue to Glen Rock Borough. Daniel was drafted to fight in the Civil War but it is unknown at this time if he enlisted.
Emeline was a daughter of blacksmith Amos Fair and Elizabeth Gerberich and she was born October 11, 1838 in York. Her mother, Elizabeth Gerberich was Catherine (Gerberick) Bortner's cousin. Emeline's brother Israel Fair married Daniel G Bortner's youngest sister Julian. Emeline died at just 25 years of age on February 3, 1864 in Codorus.
Daniel would remarry Susan Boyer in 1866. Daniel and Susan had 2 children together
