Jacob G Bortner was born November 23, 1826 in Chanceford, York, Pennsylvania. He was a farmer and learned the tannery trade in Maryland at the Krouse tannery. He married Matilda Masimore on March 4, 1852. She was a daughter of farmer Daniel Masimore and Christiana Reitz and was born June 19, 1826 in Glen Rock. Jacob's home and tannery was built in 1851-1852 in Glen Rock. He also manufactured yellow dye and flavine from the black oak in the area. He made the most of his skill and worked hard at at it until his death in 1901.
