Elizabeth Bortner
Peter Lau Rohrbaugh And their descendants |
Elizabeth Bortner was born January 17, 1817 in Chanceford, York, Pennsylvania. She was the first of 13 children. She and her family lived near Christian and Susanna (Lau) Rohrbach's farm. She was married their son Peter in 1837. They raised 10 children together. Peter Lau Rohrbaugh was the son of Christian Rohrbach and Susanna Lau. He was born May 3, 1815 in Codorus, York, Pennsylvania. Peter's grandfather Lorentz Rohrbach fought in the American Revolution. Lorentz was a sergeant in Captain George Hoover's company in 1776, Peter Zolinger's company from Paradise Township, 4th Co. 7th Battalion in 1778, Michael Leehner's company, 4th Co, 5th Battalion in 1779 and also Henry Kessler's company, 4th Co. 5th Battalion in 1782. |
Peter was a shoemaker and taught this trade to his first born son Levi Lafayette who would become a master at it and would make shoes until his death in 1911. When Peter's father died in 1859, he was given land to farm and had no time to be a shoemaker anymore.
Sadly two months after Peter's father died, Elizabeth and Peter's 10 year old son Jacob was killed from a felled cherry tree on April 9, 1859. This no doubt wore heavily on the family. Elizabeth would bear four more children after Jacob died, three daughters and then a son. Peter farmed the land of his grandfather's along with his two sons John and Jesse. This was hard work for just three men. When the war of the rebellion came John and Jesse had to stay close at home to help provide for their three sisters and baby brother Edwin. Levi, the eldest brother was drafted but it is unknown if he fought in the war.
Peter died February 1, 1883, leaving Elizabeth alone, while Edwin the last child living with them was in medical college at John Hopkins University. Elizabeth took up residence with her daughter Anna Mary and her husband Albert Kessler. Elizabeth died July 23, 1903 in Codorus, York, Pennsylvania.
