7 Nathaniel Bortner was born August 7, 1861 in Codorus, York, Pennsylvania. He was a motorman on the Littlestown and McSherrystown lines in Hanover, Pennsylvania. He was a very good driver despite losing 4 fingers in an accident at work on March 5, 1902 when his hand was crushed by an armature. In the early morning hours of January 21, 1921 while driving a trolley for the Littlestown line he spotted mule in the dark on a railway bridge narrowly escaping a derailment. He married Mary Emma Krug on April 9, 1882. She was a daughter of miller, butcher and farmer John Krug and Susan Willet and was born April 6, 1859 in Oxford, Adams, Pennsylvania.
Nathaniel and his wife Emma were parents of 3 young children when Emma died in May of 1893 and in August of that same year Nathaniel's father Jonas died.
