She was a daughter of leading York County builder Levi Bahn and Margaret Rebecca Bortner and was born May 15, 1853 in Shrewsbury, York, Pennsylvania.
Sarah's father Levi Bahn was known as "The Barn Builder" in York County. He built the mill owned and operated by the Hon. Henry M. Bortner and built the first meeting house in Glen Rock. By 1900 most of all the large barns and dwellings in Codorus Township were built by him. Sarah's mother Margaret was grand daughter of Revolutionary soldier George Bortner and Maria Appolonia Floucher. Arthur and Sarah were distant cousins.
